Julia Rawlinson - author

Julia was born and grew up in London, at the edge of Richmond Park, where she spent many happy hours watching birds, butterflies and bunnies. Her mum, aunt and granny all wrote ridiculous poems to commemorate family events, so she can’t remember a time when she didn’t have a tendency to think in rhyme. She went to Southampton University, where she got a Geography degree and a husband-to-be, Neil. They spent a summer travelling around America (where they got engaged and bought a huge green car, affectionately known as the Mutant Frog, which broke down in lots of interesting places like Death Valley and Sunset Boulevard), and then lived in Crewe for a few years, where Julia worked for Barclays Bank, trying to make the words Data Protection Legislation sound interesting.

They finally settled in Warwickshire, where she had her two boys, Ben and Tom, and decided that she would rather write about birds, butterflies and bunnies (and foxes, bears and mules…) than Data Protection Legislation. The boys are a huge inspiration to her - Fred and the Little Egg was written when Ben had a phase of 'hatching' anything remotely egg-shaped, Ferdie and the Falling Leaves was inspired by Ben asking her to fix autumn leaves back onto a tree, and the idea for Ferdie’s Springtime Blossom came to her when she was pushing Tom through drifts of snowy blossom in his pushchair.

Julia loves the natural world and being outside in the garden, and she also gets enormous pleasure from finding exactly the right words for a poem or story.
